Munich

Munich is one of the few landlocked cities where you'll come across surfers, board and wetsuit included. When you go running in Munich, you will discover their favourite spot, but also the impressive Nymphenburg castle and the futuristic BMW headquarters.

Munich, located not far from the Bavarian foothills and Lake Constance, is Germany's third most populous city. It is Germany's second most popular tourist destination and has a relatively recent history for an Old World city. Indeed, the village of Munichen was founded in the 9th century around a Benedictine abbey. Situated on one of the "salt routes" that brought the precious commodity from the producing towns to the south, it has an important architectural and historical heritage as the capital of Bavaria. In the decades following the Second World War, it was notorious for being the 'capital of the Nazi movement', but it maintained a major political, economic and cultural role. This earned it its nickname: the "secret capital". During your run, you can watch the surfers on the Eisbach, the artificial river that runs through Munich, whose name literally means "river of ice". It's a great way to cool off on a summer's day! While you walk or jog around Munich, we will show you, among other architectural wonders, the two town halls located on Marienplatz, in the heart of the city. The Altes Rathaus is in Gothic style and the Neues Rathaus in Neo-Gothic style, inspired by the Brussels Town Hall. The Olympic domain is another great place to stretch your legs. Finally, you can admire some of the ornate fountains that Munich has to offer. There are almost 1200 of them!
